OCWC Webinar February 2010 : Using Moodle for OCW

The OCWC webinar this month is on “Using Moodle for OpenCourseWare projects”. The speaker is Jenny Gray of the Open University, UK. She is the lead technical developer for the OpenLearn project. As you can see from the website, there has been a lot of customization of Moodle to provide a platform for open contents, collaboration and discussion. This webinar will be helpful for those who are planning to open an OpenCourseWare site but have not decided on what content management system to use. Jenny will talk about why using Moodle for an OpenCourseWare project makes sense, and what kind of functions and customization are possible with Moodle.

Moodle is one of the most widely used learning management systems in the world and is an open source program. Join us in the webinar and hear about how you can utilize your existing LMS to open your education contents to the world. You can also use this open source program to easily set up a simple OpenCourseWare site. This webinar is intended for all audience regardless of the technical background and is open for free to anyone interested in OpenCourseWare. To participate, go to http://breezemeeting.asu.edu/ocwc . New Newsletter for the New Year!
The OpenCourseWare Consortium is launching a new format for our newsletters to give more information on events and issues of interest to the OCW community. Each month we will send out “Events and Updates”, which will list OCW-related events and short updates on issues or projects. Each quarter we’ll put together an in-depth newsletter focused on a single issue.

If you have an update to share, or your institution is sponsoring an event that would be of interest to Consortium members, please send a 2-4 sentence description and link to: newsletter@ocwconsortium.org. We also welcome your suggestions of themes for the quarterly newsletters.

We will continue to translate both the monthly updates and quarterly newsletters into multiple languages. If you are able to help us with translations into additional languages, please let us know!

OCWC Website Survey
We are in the process of redesigning the OCWC website, and we need your input! Please let us know about your experiences with the website and what you would like to see for the future. OCWC Global 2010
Call for Proposals for the OCW Consortium’s annual conference is now open! This year’s theme is Educational Policy and OpenCourseWare. We are accepting proposals in English, Spanish, Chinese and Vietnamese, and we will provide translators for presentations made in these languages. El OpenCourseWareConsortium está lanzando un nuevo formato para nuestros boletines mensuales con el objetivo de brindar mayor información sobre eventos y temas de interés para la comunidad OCWC. Enviaremos mensualmente un nuevo apartado de “Eventos y actualizaciones” en el que se mencionarán los eventos y actualizaciones con relación a temas y proyectos del OCWC. Cada trimestre publicaremos un boletín a fondo referente a un tema en específico.

OCWC Webinar Jan. 2010: What, Why and How of Metadata

The monthly OCWC Webinar this month is on metadata. Clay Whipkey, the Technical Director of OCWC, will speak about why we should care about metadata and what we should do with it. This webinar is intended for all administrators of OCW and individuals who are not too technically savvy but would like to hear about metadata in plain English. If you have an advanced technical understanding of things, you can still join in on the conversation after Clay’s presentation. Bring your expertise if you would like to talk about the whys, the whats, and the hows of metadata.

The webinar is usually held on the first Thursday of the month, but we will hold it on the second Thursday this month on the 14th. You can join the webinar at http://breezemeeting.asu.edu/ocwc. The webinar starts at 10AM EST, but the meeting room will be open from the day prior to the meeting. If you need to check your technical specifications, you can come into the meeting room before the scheduled time and check make sure that you can view the browser window properly. See you all then.

Call for Participation: OCWC Global 2010

The OpenCourseWare Consortium is pleased to announce the Call for Participation for the OCWC Global 2010, to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Vietnam Education Foundation and the Ministry of Education and Training are the co-hosts of the event.

The OCWC Global has always been an opportunity to learn about the best practices and technology in OCW and OER. The conference will also feature extraordinary keynote speakers from around the world who will speak on education. OpenCourseWare, and policy. More information on speakers will be provided when the registration begins on February 1st.

We would like to invite you to submit proposals through January 31, 2010. Proposals are being accepted for presentations, workshops, and discussions. The theme for the 2010 conference is Educational Policy and Sustainable OCW, and we are accepting proposals in the following four areas:
- OCW as Policy
- Sustainability and Beyond
- Technology and Accessibility
- Users of OCW

Welcoming our new Membership Services Coordinators

There are more reasons to celebrate the New Year at the Consortium. We have two new staff members joining us as Membership Services Coordinators. Igor Lesko and Marcela Morales Barragán add diversity to the Consortium by bringing varied experiences and academic backgrounds. Igor is originally from Slovakia but has been living in South Africa for the past seven years. He has studied European Studies and Development Studies in Slovakia, Germany, and South Africa. He has worked on various education projects as a researcher and a coordinator. Included among the projects is a Free Courseware project at the University of Western Cape. His interests include development, web 2.0 technologies, digital publications, and of course, education.

Marcela is an instructional designer with a decade’s experience as a project manager in various education programs. Her position at the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey prior to joining the Consortium had her manage teacher training programs and international exchange programs in which she had an opportunity to travel all over the world to increase awareness of different cultures. Marcela believes in the transformative power of education, and this is what attracted her to the work at the Consortium. Igor and Marcela are the two successful candidates out of hundreds of applicants. And I am sure that you will see why once we get to know them a little better.

As membership services coordinators, Igor and Marcela will be working closely with the member institutions and other institutions interested in OCW. They will be in charge of the full cycle of the membership application processes and will provide assistance to our members with their projects. It is a great pleasure to introduce Igor and Marcela to the community, and I am sure everyone will join me in congratulating them and also making them feel welcome in the community.

Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges
The most exciting part about OpenCourseWare is that it never ceases to evolve; the basic idea of sharing takes on a new and different form through individual projects. There has been a very active movement for community colleges to open up education in recent years. Among them, the Washington State Student Completion Initiative is a program that strives to assist students especially from lower income families to complete their education. Open contents is a big part of the initiative. In order to strengthen the curriculum and teaching in basic gatekeeper courses, 80 high enrollment courses will be redesigned for online and blended delivery and will be available to the public. Opening the courses is an attempt at reducing the cost of textbooks for the students and at promoting active sharing among colleges. With the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges as a new member of the Consortium, we are looking forward to more activities from community colleges from around the world.

APTIKOM in Indonesia
APTIKOM is an association of computer science departments from more than 700 universities in Indonesia. During the annual conference held on November 18th and 19th, there was an in-depth discussion on utilizing OpenCourseWare for setting standards to improve the quality of education and pedagogical practices. Meena Hwang, the Interim Director of Community Outreach, gave a presentation OCWC. APTIKOM is now preparing to launch their OCW site as a collaborative effort between universities, the government, and the private sector. The use of open source software and open contents is a well received idea in Indonesia, and we hope to witness an upsurge of OCW from Indonesia. Interviews from APTIKOM are available on Youtube.

The OCWC Webinar
The monthly webinars are usually held on the first Thursday of the month. Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges

Lo más emocionante acerca de OpenCourseWare es que nunca deja de evolucionar. La idea básica de compartir toma una forma nueva y diferente a través de los proyectos individuales. Recientemente, ha habido un movimiento muy activo para las comunidades universitarias para hacer de la educación algo abierto. Entre ellos, el Washington State Student Completion Initiative es un programa que se esfuerza por ayudar a los estudiantes especialmente a los provenientes de familias con pocos medios a terminar sus estudios. Los contenidos abiertos es una gran parte de la iniciativa. Вашингтонская коллегия общественных и технических колледжей
Самое важное в OpenCourseWare это то, что эта концепция всегда развиваться; основная идея распространения приобретает новую форму в отдельных проектах. В последние несколько лет существуют очень активные движения в сообществе колледжей, для того чтобы сделать образование доступным. Среди них Washington State Student Completion Initiative - программа, которая предназначена для помощи студентам, в основном из семей с низким доходом, для завершения их образования. Открытое содержание - это основная часть такой стратегии. Для того чтобы отшлифовать учебный план и курсы обучения на начальных курсах, 80 курсов будут выложены для публичного online доступа. Открытие курсов - это попытка снижения затрат на книги для студентов и продвижения идеи открытого распространения знаниями между колледжами. С Вашингтонской коллегией общественных и технических колледжей, как с новым членом Консорциума, мы ожидаем больше активностей для сообществ колледжей по всему миру.

APTIKOM в Индонезии
APTIKOM - это ассоциация факультетов компьютерных наук из более чем 700 университетов Индонезии. В течение ежегодной конференции, которая была проведена 18-19 ноября, состоялась дискуссия, во время которой были определены цели использования OpenCourseWare в установлении стандартов улучшения качества образования и педагогических методик. Мина Ванг, директор по внешним связям, представила презентацию об OCWC. APTIKOM на данный момент подготавливает запуск собственного OCW сайта, как совместного проекта между университетами, правительством и частным сектором. 인도네시아의 APTIKOM

APTIKOM은 인도네시아에 위치한 700개가 넘는 대학의 컴퓨터학과 연합입니다. 11월 18일부터 19일까지 개최된 연례 컨퍼런스 동안, 교육의 질과 교육적 실천을 향상시키도록 기준을 세우는 오픈코스웨어의 이용에 대한 심도 있는 토론이 있었습니다. 황미나 OCWC 대외협력 이사가 컨소시엄에 대한 발표를 했습니다. The OCW Consortium was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 2008. Many people put in the work required to transform the Consortium from a loosely tied affiliation of like-minded people to a more organized entity that is at the center of the worldwide movement of opening up education. As the Consortium makes new strides in this different capacity, the decision to collect membership dues was made by the Board of Directors at its April 2009 meeting. Membership dues, along with grants and other revenue sources, will allow the Consortium to continue playing its important role on a global scale. Paying the membership dues is a means for each member institution to express commitment to taking ownership of the Consortium. ‘Inclusive’ has always been one of the core values of the Consortium, therefore, institutions that do not have the resources for membership dues can request a partially or fully subsidized membership. Please contact us for more information. The 2010 membership fee structure is as follows.

Details on each of the member categories and associated fees can be found here.

The lead contact at each member institution has received a letter outlining the new membership categories and asking that the institution declare their membership category. Invoices based on these categories have been sent to each institution. Thank you to those of you who have already paid Membership Dues for 2010. Some institutions have expressed interest in becoming sustaining members of the Consortium, and we are seeking more members who will assist in securing financial sustainability of the Consortium. Barcamp Loja 2009 was held on the 28th of November at the Universidad Tecnica Particular de Loxa in Ecuador. The conference was built around the theme of technology and its impact on society, education, and business. Tom Caswell, the Strategic Outreach Manager of the OpenCourseWare Consortium spoke about OER and OCW. You can view the presentation with simultaneous Spanish interpretation below.

Edmundo Tovar from the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid also represented the Consoritum and spoke about OCW at this event. Edmundo serves as a Board member of the OpenCourseWare Consortium and is intimately involved with activities at Universia, a consortium of Spanish speaking universities in OCW. And of course, the presentationis in fluent Spanish.

OCWC Global 2010: Educational Policy and OCW
The 2010 Annual OCWC Global Meeting will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam. Vietnam OCW has presented itself as a unique government-run initiative and is having a great impact on education in Vietnam. The conference website will be ready in early December at http://conference.ocwconsortium.org. Discussions at the conference will be built around the theme of Educational Policy and OCW. Details on participation and presentation proposals will be provided on the conference website.

More Collaboration, bigger impact
We are all about openness and sharing, and what better way is there than to collaborate with more people? Mary Lou Forward, the Executive Director of OCWC met with Jay Yoon, the project lead for Creative Commons Korea on November 7th to discuss how each party can collaborate further and contribute to opening up education. University students were also invited to the discussion; it was a chance for them to learn about what they can do to share knowledge. OCWC is already involved with bringing Creative Commons into Vietnam, and this type of collaboration promises to open doors for more activities and impact at different levels.

OCWC November Webinar
The University of California, Irvine has implemented a “hub-and-spoke” system of OCW distribution. Search engine optimization is partially accomplished through a network of Web sites that link back to the original OCW course hosted at UC Irvine. In this webinar, Larry Cooperman, Director of UC Irvine’s OpenCourseWare project will describe this architecture and some surprising results in terms of visibility. The webinar will also briefly review UC Irvine’s model for OCW sustainability.

The webinar will be held on December 3rd at 10AM EST. If you are interested in participating, please email your name and affiliation to feeback@ocwconsortium.org, and you will be given instruction on how to participate. The webinar is open to anyone interested in OpenCourseWare.

The 1st Asia Regional OCW Conference
From the 4th to 7th was the first Asia OCW conference. It was held at Korea University in Seoul, Korea. Speakers from Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, China, the United States and Korea spoke about current issues in OCW.
