University of Basque Country moves forward on OCW targets

Last January, the University of Basque Country (also known as UPV/EHU) joined the Consortium, and they began to solicit OCW course proposals from faculty shortly after. They have already received 82 applications.

They’ve now announced their targets for next year. Twenty-three courses will be published by this December, followed by an additional twenty-two courses in the first quarter of 2009. By the close of 2009 they anticipate having 100 courses online.

The Open University of Israel launched their OCW in March, with plans to publish course materials and more than 250 complete textbooks. Here is their announcement:

OCW at the Open University of Israel: free public access to on-line academic digital books and study materials

The Open University of Israel (OUI) is the largest university and academic publisher in Israel. With more than 40,000 students, it offers 650 courses in all major disciplines, and prints over a million copies of its textbooks annually. The university has a robust Hebrew-based home-grown LMS and it offers a rich variety of on-line learning models, including Web 2.0 applications. We use a hybrid (or blended) pedagogical model (Bonk, 2006) which combines distance a-synchronous tutoring with face-to-face sessions, some by video broadcasting to study centers and to students’ homes via their broadband web access.

In May 2008 the OUI launched the “Pe’er” OCW project (in Hebrew: “Opening Treasures of the Mind”, http://ocw.openu.ac.il/), with the intention to give free and open access to its learning materials and to a selected collection of its books. The project is was funded by the Rothchild Foundation and is conceptually similar to the OU-UK’s OpenLearn and to MIT’s OCW projects. The unique aspect of the OUI’s endeavor is the conversion of full titles from print to e-books and to audio books (in MP3 format). We began with 10 titles and will be opening more than 250 of our textbooks in 50 different courses to be freely available on-line. Many of the titles are supplemented by video lectures by the course designers or by other experts.

Additionally, the course core materials will be supplemented by reusable learning objects prepared by the teaching staff at OUI, like on-line quizzes, lecture summaries, presentations, dictionaries, and video-recordings of live sessions. The different items that will be made available to students and the to the general public, in the spirit of OCW. The Open University requires user registration in order to be able to assess public usage and user profiles. Our vision is to enable users to access OUI learning materials on mobile platforms and to add translated versions of the courses, initially in Arabic and Russian, for potential international audience.

OCWC Update from Technology Track

We got some worthwhile work done during the technology track of the OCWC conference in Dalian, China.

  • We tested site metrics tools for OCWC use, including Google Analytics. This is still in the testing phase.
  • We wrote a technology survey to establish a technical contact for each institution and to find out what types of software members are using to create and publish OCW content. This is almost done, and Clay has agrrd to send it out (I think).
  • We wrote a Google Doc that compares eduCommons, core Moodle, and OU-UK Moodle. This is intended to help better inform OCW software decisions by newcomers.

Well, this is my first article. Let me give you my “official introduction first”

Lucifer (Luc) Chu graduated from Taiwan’s National Central University in 1998 with a BS in electrical engineering. He is the founder of OOPS(Opensource Opencourseware Prototype System). He spends half of his time in Taiwan and half flying around the world to promote OOPS. He made a big mistake in high school while choosing his own name, so you can call him Luc if you like

I’ll try to tell the story in several posts, cause I’m not that familiar with wordpress system…:>

 The date was June 13, 2007. The International Opencourseware and E-learning Conference was held in Taipei, Taiwan. The speakers who sat with the audience included guests from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, the Open University of U.K.,Canada Research Council, Keio University of Japan,International Opencourseware Consortium and the National Institute of Multimedia Education of Japan. There were also over 600 participants from different parts of Taiwan. The organizer of this conference was OOPS’ founder, Lucifer Chu. He stood up, started to walk toward the stage for his 30-minute presentation. For any other speaker, this might only have taken 30 seconds, but for him, it took over 1,200 days and over hundreds of thousands of miles to get on the stage…….

these young people are OOPS volunteers, they are great!
